#LivingMyDreamJob: Happily Breaking Boundaries in the Entertainment Industry with Rose Liston

It is easy to become jaded in the entertainment industry but the incredible Rose Liston (from "The Magicians") shows how positivity and a smile can get you through all setbacks. I had the sincere pleasure to sit down with Rose and learn about her journey and her tips for aspiring actors. If you are at all interested in the entertainment industry, or just want to feel uplifted and like you can accomplish all your dreams, then be sure to absorb Rose's infectious positivity!

Let's start at the beginning! What is your background?

My background is pretty much what I am still doing! Film& TV! Of course, I did start when I was little in random plays, but film has always been the outlet I wanted to pursue. I really started to pursue my acting career at 9 years old with lots of support from my family. We would drive to London all the time for any type of audition I would get, pretty much just like today! Now it's LA! (with even more support from my family, because LA is wild!)

How did your career evolve into the entertainment industry?

Honestly, I've never had a career that wasn't in the entertainment industry. Since I started at such a young age, this has truly been the only career I've ever wanted. I started like everyone seems to; commercials and shorts films. I was lucky enough to get a lot of fun projects that made me fall more in love with film & TV, to the point that my family & I knew we needed to move to LA.

What do you do on a day to day basis for your career?

I think that experiencing life is so important for acting, so I always focus on being in the moment. That is so hard these days with all of our apps & technology taking over our mind. I also try to make sure I keep up-to-date on the industry, so I am always looking at Deadline & Variety. Everything that happens in the industry can affect you in some way, so knowing what's going on before it ripples down to your career makes a difference, in my opinion!

What do you love most about your career?

Ugh! So much. I love that I can tell people stories. I love that I can keep meeting new, amazingly talented people with every job or even audition I go to. I love how film & TV can inspire and affect people's lives in such positive ways. (And also being dressed & made up every day you're on set is just the coolest) (and don't forget the food hehe)

Were there any setbacks that you have had over your career that turned into positive movements in your career?

Set backs are never set backs if you have the right outlook on them. Yes I have had negative experiences in this crazy career I've chosen, but it's only made me more knowledgeable and smart. I wouldn't change my experiences, because I wouldn't be who I am today without them.

What is the best piece of career advice you have heard? Do you have any advice for our readers on creating their own opportunities?

I love me some quotes! Something I really love to reiterate to myself is Steve Martin's quote “Be so good they can't ignore you." I think that is just the perfect advice for the acting world because there are SO many aspects of the casting process you can't control, but you CAN control your performance. You have to be the best you can be to even just be remembered for the future.

What is your goal for your future?

My goal for my future is just to make sure I am happy with everything I do. I really don't care if I'm a famous super star if I'm not happy. I always thought that sounded so weird when people said that, but now I understand totally. There is nothing more important than loving what you do. I was lucky enough to find my passion at a young age and I've been given the support to pursue it. My goal for my future is to keep moving forward, with a smile on my face!
